College Credit and Scholarships

One of the amazing benefits we offer at Idaho Syringa Girls State is the opportunity to earn college credit and apply for scholarships.

College Credit

The college credit you can earn while at Girls State is arguably the most affordable college credit you will come across. Thanks to additional funding through the State, the POLS1000 course at NNU is now free of charge!  Talk to your school counselor or other administrator about using Fast Forward funds to pay for this course; you must make arrangements to use these funds prior to summer break. If you wait until school is out, you will be unable to use the Fast Forward funds; you can still take the class, but you will need to pay the cost of $130, payable at the time of registration.

Northwest Nazarene University

NNU is offering a two (2) – college credit course for Girls State Citizens.  You must complete the week of Girls State and attend two (2) one-hour lectures (scheduled during the week of Girls State).  This is a POLS1000 Introduction to American Government Class.  These are fully transferable college credits. If you did not register for Fast Forward funding prior to the summer break, please bring a check or money order with you, along with your Social Security Number, and the completed registration form (below).

This is the information on the POLS1000 class.

This is the registration form to fill out and return to NNU.

Samsung Scholarship

Worldwide electronics leader Samsung endowed a scholarship fund of $5 million to be administered by The American Legion in 1996. Meant to show appreciation for U.S. veterans who came to Korea’s aid during its struggle against communist forces in the Korean War, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program established a series of scholarships derived from interest and other income from the principal amount. In 2014, nine $20,000 scholarships and 89 $1,100 scholarships were awarded. To date, the Samsung American Legion Scholarship has awarded more than $5.2 million to nearly 1,800 applicants.

Scholarship applications are restricted to high school juniors who attend the current session of either The American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State program and are a direct descendant – i.e. child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc. – or a legally adopted child of a wartime veteran who served on active duty during at least one of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for American Legion membership.

Samsung scholarships are for undergraduate study only and may be used for tuition, books, fees, and room and board. Winners are selected according to academic record, involvement in school and community activities, community service and financial need. Applicants who are direct descendants of Korean War veterans will receive special consideration.

Deadline and Application Process

Applicants MUST submit their application online. No late applications will be considered.  ONLY copies of applications submitted online will be accepted.

Please visit the American Legion website for the Application; scroll to the bottom of the page:
